Case profile:

Case Profile: New Housing Development

Client: County Down

Project Background

A developer/builder in County Down was unable to complete a building project because the local sewage treatment works was unable to take in the expected additional capacity and the existing private facility was unsuitable to extend to accommodate an increase in flow. It was also noted that the total population of the new development would possibly take some 6 - 9 months for completion.

Project Scope

Pollution Control were asked to provide a complete biological packaged treatment plant that would discharge to the local river, a constant acceptable quality of effluent throughout the period of a growing population that would finally stabilise at around 600 persons. Minimal de-sludging was also a requirement.

Scope of Work

- The response was to supply a submerged media biological treatment plant complete with primary treatment and final clarification that could be installed close to the development and yet remain visually acceptable.
- The equipment offered had also to be manufactured suitable for transporting within the confines of shipping and road transport regulations.
- The total plant was delivered using two low loader vehicles and assembly instructions were provided for the installers.
- The plant initially was operating at 1/3 of its design capacity but as the population increased other sections of the system were brought into operation.

Equipment Supplied

- 1 x P-600 (600 pop) primary treatment tank complete with a secondary effluent pump station and an EcoSAF biological treatment tank.
- 1 x side channel Air Blower within a GRP Enclosure which was mounted onto one end of the plant.
- 1 x Control Panel also in the same enclosure.
- 2 x Positive Displacement Lift Pumps with Level Sensor Switches and Depth Adjustment
- Pipe work Connections to Inlet/Outlet Pipe work.
- A separate final clarification tank onto which access ladder, walkways & hand rails were fitted to give full access around the plant.

Installation

The installers were able to install the unit within a few days and when ready a Pollution Control engineer went to assist in the commissioning of the plant.

Results

The system was meeting all consents to discharge into the local watercourse within a month and has been continually able to deal with the steadily increasing population in the development.
